There are many ways that you can build trust within your church leadership team. Having a common vision will only go so far when building your team. Communication, follow through and allowing your team to ask questions are all ways to build trust. Below are 3 ways to build trust on your team.
1. Communication
Allow your team to know what you need from them and why. Whenever there is a decision that you’ve made make sure they know why, who needs to do what and what comes next. At my Church we have a class called Next Steps. The class meets after every service for the first 3 Sundays of the month. This allows us to communicate that information to our team and know that they have a reason to do it. When we have communication with our team they are able to know what we are working towards.
2. Follow Through
As we say things we should follow through. If we say we are going to do something we need to make sure we follow through. Let them know if you are unable to follow through and what your new plan is. “I told you I would have this done today but I will have it by Thursday.” Make sure to take ownership of your decisions and mistakes.
3. Allow Your Team to Ask Questions
Your team should feel comfortable asking you questions. Don’t shut down someone when they are trying to communicate an issue with you. Allow them to ask and answer the question. If someone is working with your guests or maybe kids they may see something that you aren’t. By listening to your team you are opening yourself up to learn more information and letting them know that what they have to say is important. You can decide to do what they said or not but they should know that you listened.
